| 2.1 | To identify safety as an important practice in the upholstery industry. (COM) | Have the students discuss the need for safety in the work place. Discuss the emergency evacuation procedures and gathering places in the case of fire or other situation necessitating quick exit from a work area. Ask students to identify and locate safety equipment in the work area. |
| 2.2 | To identify common safety hazards in an upholstery shop. (CCT) | Tour the work site (school or community) under the direction of the instructor. Provide a safety checklist that the student can fill in prior to working at the job site and as an assessment of potential safety procedures. Consult recommended resource list for safety resources. |
| 2.3 | To identify sources of potential personal injury and proper responses to injury. (CCT) | Have the students discuss potential injuries to eyes, ears and hands. Have the students develop a list of situations when personal protective equipment (PPE) is to be used. (PSVS) Students should locate safety equipment in the work area and discuss the procedures for using it. Ensure that all students know the location of the first aid kit and the emergency eye wash station. Ensure that all students understand how to use the eye wash station. |

Have the students develop a list of chemicals used in the area. Ensure that all these materials are included in the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) binder. Ensure that all students know where to find the first aid procedures on the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS). Quiz students to determine understanding of all areas discussed. WHMIS resources are readily available. |
