Appendix A - Professional Resources for Implementation of Physical Education 1-5

The following list of resources is intended to provide suggestions for teachers in choosing appropriate resources to support the new Physical Education 1-5 curriculum. It is not a definitive list, nor is it inclusive of all the resources that teachers may need. These resources as well as others, will be contained in a more extensive bibliography to be distributed in late spring of 1998. The titles are available from the Learning Resources Distribution Centre (LRDC), formerly known as the Book Bureau or from Media Group (MGR). Prices listed are subject to change. This book of lesson plans is an extension of Children and Movement. A series of 35 lessons for the activity areas of dance, games, and gymnastics is provided. These consist of five 20-minute lessons for students at the kindergarten level, ten 30-minute lessons for Grades 1 and 2, ten 30-minute lessons for Grades 3 and 4, and ten 40-minute lessons for Grades 5 and 6. Each lesson has three parts: introduction, movement development, and culmination. Each part consists of movement tasks and organizing tasks as discussed in Children and Movement.

This comprehensive resource is divided into six parts. Part One provides an overview of physical education and the skill themes approach. Part Two focuses on the pedagogy of the skill themes approach. Part Three explains the concepts of space, effort, and relationships and presents ideas and activities for teaching them to children. Part Four is devoted to skill development in ten different themes. Some of these themes include: travelling, balancing, kicking and punting, and throwing and catching. Games, dance, and gymnastics are described in Part Five. Part Six focuses on the future. Each chapter ends with a summary and reading comprehension questions, and the skill themes chapters feature assessment guides. This excellent teacher reference includes black and white photographs, charts, diagrams, and drawings. The author takes an eclectic approach to curriculum models in physical education, attempting to merge the more traditional activity/sport orientation to elementary school physical education with the newer movement education perspective. The activities are listed by developmental levels: beginner, intermediate, and advanced so teachers can better select activities that are appropriate for the maturity of students. Although the focus of this manual is the K-3 child, the 83 learning experiences in movement and music provided can be adapted to other grade levels. This book addresses personal and social development—a large category of loosely connected concepts such as self-esteem, motivation, cooperation, and sportsmanship that has often been referred to as the affective domain. Hellison introduces five developmental levels designed to empower students to take more responsibility for their own bodies and lives, and to teach students that they have a social responsibility to be sensitive to the rights, feelings, and needs of others. The five levels—irresponsibility, self-control, involvement, self-responsibility, and caring provide a loose framework for the physical education program. The skills in this manual correspond to the skill themes in Children Moving. The first ten lesson plans are designed to develop the children’s movement vocabulary and their understanding of the movement concepts related to space, effort, and relationships. In the next 13 lessons children are introduced to various movement skills: kicking, dribbling, rolling, jumping and landing, and balancing. These introduction-to-skill lessons are designed to introduce children at the beginner level to the skills. Through the next series of lessons the skill is expanded, moving from an individual, stationary performance of the skill to execution of the skill in dynamic, multivariable situations. In addition to the movement skills development tasks, refinement cues, extension, and application/challenge tasks are written for each lesson. One part of the resource deals specifically with the process of curriculum design, implementation, and evaluation. Separate resource sections for game, dance, and gymnastics activities are contained in the last three parts of the book. Each series consists of 20 illustrated lesson plans. Each lesson is divided into five sections: "Activation," "Directed Learning," "Exploratory Learning," "Repetition & Reinforcement," and "Lesson Expander."
