Physics

Conceptual Physics: A High School Physics Program (Print-Non-Fiction). Hewit, Paul G. Addison Wesley (ADD), 1987. 660 p. ISBN 0-201-20729-X ($59.41 hdc.)

This recommended resource is a very readable text with many diagrams which help simplify complex concepts. It has a unique approach to physics with very little emphases on algebra and math problem solving. It is highly concept oriented. This is considered a "must" for students and teachers who have difficulty reading traditional texts. The supplementary material is highly recommended. It is a good to excellent support for the DSLs with the exception of the Values that Underlie Science.

Suggested Use: PHYS 20 - Wave Motion, Light, Sound, Heat Energy; PHYS 30 - Kinematics, Dynamics, Momentum, Mechanical Energy, Fluid Mechanics, Electricity, Nuclear Physics

Fundamentals of Physics: An Introductory Course (Print-Non-Fiction). Martindale, David E., et al. D.C. Heath (BB), 1987. 771 p. Order No. BB 5353 ($44.00 hdc. student edition) Order No. BB 2046 ($23.00 teacher's manual)

The applications of the theory studied are considered to be excellent. Additional resources would be needed to support the Values that Underlie Science and Science-related Interests and Attitudes. Included are a table of contents and an index.

Suggested Use: PHYS 20 - Wave Motion, Light, Sound, Heat Energy; PHYS 30 - Kinematics, Dynamics, Mechanical Energy, Fluid Mechanics, Electricity, Nuclear Physics

Fundamentals of Physics: A Senior Course (Print-Non-Fiction). Martindale, David G., et al. D.C. Heath (HTH), 1986. 825 p. ISBN 0-699-95047-5 ($52.95 hdc.)

For average to gifted students, this is considered to be good to excellent in supporting the DSLs. It is an American text.

Suggested Use: PHYS 20 - Wave Motion, Light; PHYS 30 - Kinematics, Dynamics, Momentum, Mechanical Energy, Electricity, Nuclear Physics

Merrill Physics: Principles and Problems (Print-Non-Fiction). Zitzewitz, Paul W. and Robert F. Neff. Glencoe (MMC), 1991. 736 p. ISBN 0-675-17264-0 ($66.25 hdc.)

This is a resource that was highly rated by pilot teachers. It has excellent colour graphics and photography. It has a good section on pocket labs with simple experiments to illustrate concepts. Each chapter stresses applications, the majority of which fit the STSE approach. Excellent support materials accompany the text. A Canadian edition will be available in fall, 1992. Maxwell Macmillian Canada will leave the content essentially the same, but provide SI Units only, Canadianize spellings and where possible, feature Canadian physicists. The US Teacher Wrap Around Edition will remain the same. Back orders for the Canadian student edition will be taken by the Book Bureau. Included are a table of contents, glossary and an index.

Suggested Use: PHYS 20 - Wave Motion, Light, Sound, Heat Energy; PHYS 30 - Kinematics, Dynamics, Momentum, Mechanical Energy, Electricity, Nuclear Physics

Physics in Action (Print-Non-Fiction). Dyer, Frank S. and William R. Tallman. Harcourt Brace Jovanovich (HBJC), 1991. 483 p. ISBN 0-7747-1349-6 ($36.95 hdc.)

Some of the strongest features of this resource is that it is very readable by the students and it has an interesting activity oriented approach. It is particularly strong in providing resource material for optional units. This material would make an excellent introduction to each topic, suitable for teachers without a physics background who must teach physics. This text may not be indepth enough for experienced physics teachers. The teacher edition is still to be published. Included are a table of contents, glossary and index.

Suggested Use: PHYS 20 - Wave Motion, Light, Sound, Heat Energy; PHYS 30 - Kinematics, Mechanical Energy, Electricity, Nuclear Physics

Physics Today 1 (Print-Non-Fiction). Wolfe, T.J. Elgin, et al. Prentice Hall (PRN), 1989. 778 p. ISBN 0-13-669391-1 ($51.24 hdc.)

This text is considered suitable for the average student. It is a good support for the DSLs. It adequately covers the Physics 20 course topics, but needs supplementation for Physics 30 topics. Included are a table of contents and an index.

Suggested Use: PHYS 20 - Wave Motion, Light, Sound, Heat Energy; PHYS 30 - Kinematics, Dynamics, Mechanical Energy, Fluid Mechanics, Electricity, Nuclear Physics
