The relationships between electricity and magnetism are the connecting theme in this Optional Unit. This unit can be used as an extension of Core Unit III. It can also be used to further support and enhance section C in Core Unit IV, which deals with nuclear reactors. The Motor Principle allows students to gain a deeper understanding of how electricity is produced, regardless of the type of energy that is being used to drive the generators.
In this unit students will increase their abilities to:
Explore the interrelationship between electricity and magnetism.
Apply an understanding of concepts dealing with electricity and magnetism to common experiences and practical applications.
Recognize the importance of safety when working with electrical equipment.
Perform a variety of activities to investigate electromagnetism.
Consider some of the implications of increased energy demands in the future.
Understand and use the vocabulary, structures and forms of expression which characterize physics. (COM)
Promote both intuitive, imaginative thought and the ability to evaluate ideas, processes, experiences and objects in physics in meaningful contexts. (CCT)
Appreciate the value and limitations of technology within society. (TL)
Meet their own learning needs. (IL)
