Problem Description Sheet:    So This is Your Room!

Introduction: Scale drawings are useful for many reasons. One reason is to show floor plans of a house. Another reason is to experiment with deciding what furniture and arrangements are best in a room (without having to move the heavy furniture). In this problem, we ask you to make such scale drawings.

Problem:

  1. Prepare a scale drawing of a bedroom. It could be where you sleep or the type of room you would like to sleep in. Include the position of all windows, closets, and doors. Also, draw to scale all furniture and where it is located in the room.
  2. Show two other ways the furniture could be arranged in the room. Which is the best arrangement? Explain why it is the best.
  3. In the room you have drawn, see if you can comfortably fit any of the following items. Show your arrangements and explain your work.
    1. Desk (90 cm x 50 cm)
    2. Bookshelf (120 cm long, 40 cm wide, 122 cm high)
    3. Replace your bed with a queen size bed (218 cm long and 152 cm wide)
    4. Any other furniture item(s) you wish
