In this unit, I plan to provide students with the opportunity to:
___ observe me using gender-neutral language
___ learn and use gender-neutral language
___ learn in a variety of groups including same gender and mixed gender
___ analyze and discuss gender-biased materials and activities
___ critically reflect on the current and evolving roles of women and men in society
___ discuss gender issues in an atmosphere where these issues are a valid and open topic of discussion
___ acknowledge the accomplishments of both men and women
___ tell me when I am treating male and female students in non-equitable ways.
In this unit of study, I plan to:
___ model the use of gender-neutral language
___ introduce non-traditional role models such as female referees and male nutritionists
___ support the involvement of both genders in all activities
___ ensure that gender equitable behaviour among students is explicitly supported
___ address gender inequitable behaviour among students in immediate yet sensitive ways
___ spend an equitable amount of time with both male and female students
___ avoid saying things that may lead students to think that boys must act one way and girls another way (e.g., “Boys will be boys”, “Act like a lady”)
___ avoid separating boys and girls for seating, teams, lining up, etc.
___ structure groups so that all students get to assume a variety of roles (e.g., team captain, group leader, goal keeper, recorder, referee, facitlitator)
___ ensure that expectations concerning behaviour are fair and equitable for females and males
___ ensure that responsibilities are shared equally by male and female students
___ create an environment where no one is forced into a predetermined
role or status because of gender.
